The Invisible Man: A Modern Psychological Take On A Classic Movie

Blumhouse produced yet another remake of the classic Universal monster movie The Invisible Man. It stars Elisabeth Moss, who is in an abusive relationship from her controlling, obsessive husband, who is in entrepreneur and creator of new optics technology.

The movie does a great job of establishing the abusive relationship. Elisabeth Moss escapes the husband at the beginning of the movie and even weeks after being away from him, she must relearn how to be in society. She is afraid to go outside at first and is paranoid. The Invisible Man really spends time to establish this character Moss is playing. She carries the movie so well and she plays the role so convincingly. The movie spends the first half establishing character and the second half getting into scary elements and the invisible man stalking Elisabeth Moss. In a lot of horror movies finding relatable and likable character is not seen often enough.

Leigh Whannell is the writer and director of the movie and he is the creator of Saw and Insidious movies as well. He knows how to make a good horror movie. But there is one character played by Aldis Hodge, who is a cop who is written very poorly. When there is a supposed break in by the invisible man, he doesn’t take the threat seriously. He’s a cop with a teenage daughter, and should be more careful about security. Near the end of the movie the daughter is home alone with the door unlocked, which is even more bad writing on this character. Cops would never leave their door unlocked. That’s just lazy writing for the antagonist to get in the house. At least have the antagonist break in or something.

While this movie does have a predictable script, Elisabeth Moss does an amazing job portraying a character who was in an abusive relationship and the script does a great job taking the classic Universal monster and updating the story for modern times. Blumhouse has definitely produced a clever, effective remake with The Invisible Man. 🍔🍔🍔 and 1/2🍔
