Onward: A Mythical Bro-Comedy

Onward is the newest Pixar movie and it does feel like a different tone from previous movies. It features a world full of mythical creatures but it also feels lives in. It stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as elf brothers. They find a magic staff and spell left by their father so they can see him for 24 hours. After the gem that powers the staff breaks, they must go on an adventure to find another one.

This world we are introduced to is a place we’re magic once existed but all the creatures developed technology and stopped using magic. The movie has clever sight gags about store names with funny names. The characters must learn to use their abilities that their ancestors did centuries ago. Chris Pratt and Tom Holland have good brotherly chemistry. Pratt is the older brother who fun loving and into the lore from centuries ago. Holland is the nervous younger brother. They must trust each other along their journey.

When Holland tries to perform the spell on the dad initially something goes wrong and only the dads legs appear. There are a lot of gags about the dad trying to communicate and the brothers disguise the dad and it’s reminiscent of Weekend At Bernie’s. Onward is also a road trip movie and has many plot points of road trip movies.

This movie deals with real modern problems, like a stepdad fitting in, brothers getting along, and closure of a dead loved one. There is a twist at the end that is a nice change of pace. They final battle is also very clever. Onward is a nice addition to the Pixar movie library and is a must see. 🍔🍔🍔
