Da 5 Bloods: PTSD and Gold

Da 5 Bloods is a Netflix original movie about an African American military unit from Vietnam. It follows the military unit as the return to Vietnam to find the remains of their commander, played by Chadwick Boseman. Spike Lee wrote and directed the movie and it also stars Delroy LindoJonathan Majors, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, and Isiah Whitlock Jr..

Each character has a specific reason to go back to Vietnam, in addition to the gold and finding their commander. There are some really touching moments in Da 5 Bloods. Clarke Peters visits a former lover and finds out something even more shocking. Delroy Lindo went to get final closure and to deal with his PTSD. Delroy Lindo is the best actor in the movie. He really conveys someone dealing with daily fear and trauma. He goes on rants and gets over the top in some very tense situations. Chadwick Boseman is shown in flashbacks to the Vietnam War. He makes rousing speeches and is there as a moral compass.

The groups search for the gold gets them into very dangerous situations. Things get out of hand when they accidentally find a mine field, and find Vietnamese soldiers who try to blackmail them. There are even some missionaries that get mixed up with them and pay the price. Ultimately the gold causes harm and pain to the team, but goes to help those in need.

Da 5 Bloods dives into the ways black people have been treated in America as well as during the Vietnam war.  It dives into how soldiers are affected by war and PTSD. Spike Lee shows clips of past presidents and equal rights activists during the movie when the characters talk about historical events. It shows that closure isn't always pretty and the greed isn't always good. 🍔🍔🍔🍔
